Exceptional performance from Dundee High school at KZN SASA championship. On Thursday, February 23, the eight excited learners that form part of the Umzinyathi athletics team, left for the KZN SASA championships held at Kings Park stadium in Durban. The championships showed a high calibre of competition over the two days.
Sommer vroeg op die eerste dag is daar bewys dat Dundee Hoër se atlete kan kers vashou by die beste in Kwazulu-Natal, met Jan-Frederik van Zyl wat dadelik ‘n kwalifiserende afstand vir die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskappe gegooi het. Ons naellopers het ook hulle staal bewys deur deur te dring na die finaal van die 100m en 200m items. DHS verspringers het ook bewys dat hulle vir niemand hoef terug te staan nie.

At the end of the championships Dundee High School walked away with 10 medals which included five gold, three silver and two bronze medals. Hoërskool Dundee wil net sê hulle is baie trots op hulle atlete se prestasies en ons wil ook net dankie sê aan almal wat die atlete bygestaan het in hierdie tyd, veral die Van Zyl familie.
Dundee High’s athletics is going to go from strength to strength. They ended the season with a call to arms from the athletes to all the other winter sporting codes “Black and Red, we will fight until we’re dead.”
Spartans make semi finals once again
On Friday, February 24, the Dundee High first girls hockey team left for Pongola to take part in the seventh annual Spar Tournament. Pongola once again were fantastic hosts with entertainment and team building planned for the evening. Early Saturday morning mist was short lived as the Pongola sun took no prisoners, with players, spectators and even umpires showing signs of dehydration in the 39 degree temperatures.
DHS played a fantastic first game against Utrecht winning 3-0, with Nadia Raffenberg (two beautiful goals) and Jongi Lembethe popping the ball past the keeper. St Dominic’s was a more challenging game, but Gabby Carter insured a win with a fantastic goal in a penalty corner in the dying seconds of the game. At midday, in sweltering heat, DHS took on the hosts Pongola.
Pongola, being conditioned to the weather, were definitely more resistant to the high temperatures and rampant humidity and scored an early goal. The Spartans dug deep and Nontu Khuzwayo scored a beautiful goal with a break away run from the half way line. The match ended in a draw. Leaving DHS top of the pool to take on Pionier.
The first half of the semi final game showed the Spartans playing their best hockey all tournament, however, by the second half, the legs just couldn’t hold the incredibly disciplined, structurally sound and fit Pionier outfit.
Congratulations to Que Mdletshe, the first Boys’ Hockey coach who accompanied the girls, and was awarded the ‘Most Promising Umpire’. He will be umpiring the regional finals in July. Many thanks to Mr Lippke for driving the girls and to Spar for allowing the learners the opportunity to play the sport they love.
Zorba goes head-to-head with Landbou Hendrik Potgieter
On February 18 the first rugby boys took to the field for the first time this season, at Sarel Cilliers’ annual Rugby Day.
The game was very physical, with both teams showing impressive skill and determination. Cebelihle Kubheka, Koos Mdladla and Dylan Maré scored beautiful tries and the boys played their hearts out. Unfortunately the game ended in a 19 all draw. Well done boys and we look forward to a positive season ahead!
MacGreiger Stein keeps on collecting medals
MacGreiger took part in the KZN CSSA gala in Durban and did extremely well. He got five gold medals and broke three KZN CSSA records for boys u/15. He received colours and qualified to swim at the SA CSSA swimming championship in Germiston in March. Well done MacGreiger, the school is proud of you!
Chelmsford Challenge
The past weekend DHS learners represented well at the Chelmsford Challenge. The following learners took part in the 500m swim: Megan Peddie, Gabby Carter, Joshua Donaldson, Keagan Donaldson, Ronnie Mulligan, Abigail Box, Dylan Maré, Janco Kotzé, Tyler Fraser, Jamie Shapiro, Hamish Grieson, Tamarah Grieson, Natalie Mctaggart, Savannah Calitz, Justin Viljoen, Insaaf Cassim, Lay’Laa Gumede and Duane Lauwrens.
The following learners took part in the 1000m swim: Jordan von Rauenstein, Megan Peddie, Kayla Tredoux, Nadia Raffenberg, Keaton von Rauenstein, Gabby Carter, Karl Thom, Stefan Thom, Thealize Jacobs, Dremar Jacobs, Eric Lauwrens. Cameron Meintjies, Keshmiel Govender, Cade Sharp, Bryce Sharp and Huzaifah Mahomed. Mrs Carter, her husband, Craig Carter and their son, Aidan also took part in the 1000m swim. Dundee High School is very proud of all the swimmers!
