Lasec learners find out how a hotel functions

The aim of the visit was to make learners aware of the dynamics of running and managing a hotel

On Friday and Saturday, learners from Ladysmith Secondary School (Lasec) embarked on a visit to the Royal Hotel in Murchison Street. The aim of the visit was to make learners aware of the dynamics of running and managing a hotel.

The children visited the Housekeeping department, where they had the opportunity to meet various personnel who contribute to the effective running of the hotel as a whole.

They were treated to a hands-on demonstration of the arrangement of the guest rooms.

Learners then visited the Reception and Administration departments, where they learnt about the auditing of books and how to go about booking guests in.

The visiting of the kitchen was next on the agenda, where learners got in touch with certain practicalities such as functions of different utensils.

The next part of the visit allowed learners to visit function rooms, including that of the Pioneer Suite, The Battlefields Suite, The Mayor’s Chamber, The Regiment Suite and Sir Reay’s, where they were taught how to set up tables, cutlery and etiquette associated with treating of guests.

Lunch consisting of cottage pie and fresh juice was then provided to the learners, courtesy of the Royal Hotel.

The day was rounded off by the learners visiting and enjoying themselves at the pool.

Lasec educators Mr K Bihaspat and Miss P Sishangse would like to place on record their sincere thanks and appreciation to the Royal Hotel for once again stepping up to the platform and contributing positively to the education of the learners.

Special thanks to Mr and Mrs Lee and Mrs Adri Viljoen for this kind opportunity.
