A total of 35 enthusiastic St Dominic’s Newcastle learners wrote the first round of the South African Mathematics Olympiad on March 15.
The junior competition consisted of two separate question papers – one for Grade Eight and one for Grade Nine – while the senior competition had one paper for all Grade 10 and matric entrants.
The question papers were an hour long and consisted of 20 multiple choice questions, which had to be answered without the use of calculators.

A total of 21 learners attained 50 per cent or higher, qualifying them to participate in the second round of the competition on May 10.
They are: Aran Hsu, Bavik Lalthaparsadh, Chrismé Grobler, Rebaona Mosadi, Natasha Friend, Mihir Lalbeharie, Nicole Downs, Yuren Naidoo, Farhaan Ismail, Omera Ramdharee, Minette Janse van Vuuren, Peggy Hsu, Aadilah Jamaloodeen, Muhammad Dhoda, Surav Anandhaw, LJ van Staden, Matthew Wu, Sohail Adam, Harish Singh, Mithila Kotte and Megan Furter.
The top achievers were as follows:
Grade Eight – Aran Hsu
Grade Nine – Natasha Friend
Senior competition – Peggy Hsu
