#ThrowBackThursday: Five nostalgic memories from your childhood

We take a look at five nostalgic memories of the forgotten past.

Was the science genius Albert Einstein correct in saying technology would surpass human interaction?

Looks like his prediction was pretty spot on! Sadly, children nowadays don’t know what it is to play outside and just have fun.

Generations before this did not have iPads or Gameboys; they just had a very active imagination and creative ways to stay occupied and out of trouble.

We take a look at five nostalgic memories of the forgotten past.

1. Making mud cakes

If you type ‘mud cakes’ into a search engine, this is the result you would get:

But this is not the mud cake we are talking about. The mud cakes from our childhood consisted of lots of dirt and water.

Yes, rolling around in mud and getting dirty was great. We received a good beating after messing up the lawn, but we had fun nonetheless.

2. Climbing fruit trees – or any tree for that matter

Gone are the days when fresh fruits grew in your backyard, or where neighbours would encourage the children of the area to pick fruit and take home to their parents.

Mulberry, lemon or peach trees, we were on it. It did not matter if you got scraped or nicked on thorns, the fruits were juicy and fresh.

3. Makeshift toys

The slip n slide was invented and then our imagination took it to the next level.

All you needed was an open outdoor space, plastic bags, soap and water. BAM! Bob’s your uncle.

Hours of fun was spent on the makeshift slip n slide. It didn’t cost much…maybe a trip to the hospital when too much soap was used and cousin Wilma slammed into the tree.

4. Objects used for outdoor games

Who remembers using an old tomato box as a makeshift wicket when playing cricket outside on the streets? To children nowadays, this may sound bizarre, but at that time, improvisation was your best friend.

These boxes could also be converted into doll houses for the girls – a double story even.

5. Discipline at home

The wooden spoon was not only used to cook food, it was a discipline tool. You know your mom meant business when the wooden spoon came out!
