Mark Street closed as drummies entertain crowds for International Museum Month

This year’s theme was ‘Saying the unspeakable in museums’.

Traffic came to a halt for a few minutes yesterday while drum majorettes from Vryheid Comprehensive strutted their stuff down Market Street.

The majorettes were escorting municipal officials to the Lucas Meijer Museum where guests sat waiting for celebrations of International Museum Month to commence.
Every year since 1977 International Museum has been celebrated all around the world on May 18.
This year’s theme was ‘Saying the unspeakable in museums’.
This theme focuses on the role of museums that, by working to benefit society, become hubs for promoting peaceful relationships between people. It also highlights how the acceptance of a contested history is the first step in envisioning a shared future under the banner of reconciliation.

AbaQulusi Municipality’s officials shared with the community their enthusiasm towards investing in the tourism sector as it brings revenue to the town.

“We are aware of how there are many historical sights within the AbaQulusi area and we should see to it that these are preserved and can be viewed by all members of the public,” said the AbaQulusi speaker Michael Khumalo.
Zulu traditional dancers and the Lakeside Park Primary choir kept the guests entertained.

Guests were also treated to a tour of the Lucas Meijer museum.
