Eid Mubarak to all Muslims celebrating today

A blessed day to all Muslims out there who are celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr!

Eid-ul-Fitr, which is being celebrated today (June 26) by Muslims around the country, is the festival of the “breaking of the fast”. It is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadaan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

The holiday celebrates the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadaan. The day of Eid, therefore, falls on the first day of the month of Shawwal.

The date for the start of any lunar Hijri month varies based on the observation of the new moon by local religious authorities, so the exact day of celebration varies by locality.

Eid-ul-Fitr has a particular Salat (Islamic prayer), generally offered in an open field or large hall.

It may be performed only in congregation (Jama’at).

Muslims believe they are commanded by God, as mentioned in the Qur’an, to continue their fast until the last day of Ramadaan and pay the Zakat and fitra before offering the Eid prayers. Zakat is the compulsory giving of a set proportion of one’s wealth to charity. It is regarded as a type of worship and of self-purification.

Zakat is the third Pillar of Islam. Zakat al-Fitr is charity given to the poor at the end of the fasting in the Islamic holy month of Ramadaan.

Sadaqah, meaning ‘charity’, is the concept of voluntary giving in Islam. Described in the Holy Qur’an as ‘a beautiful loan’, sadaqah encompasses any act of charitable giving done out of compassion, love, friendship or generosity.
