Girl’s rapist sentenced to life behind bars

The accused, who is the victims step grandfather, began sexually assaulting her at the age of four while she lived with her mother.

A 15-year-old girl can finally sleep soundly, knowing the man who had continuously raped and assaulted her for over a decade is finally behind bars.

Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer, Captain J.C. Ncube said the incidents were reported to police in January 2014 by the victim’s grandmother.

The accused, who is the victims step grandfather, began sexually assaulting her at the age of four while she lived with her mother in Madadeni.

“The girl had allegedly reported the rape to her elders numerous times, but nothing was ever done about it.”

In December 2013, the victim could no longer bear living under these circumstances of abuse and decided to relocate and reside with her biological father.

She then confided in her grandmother, who reported the incident to police.

The case was handed over to the Newcastle Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for thorough investigation.

After consultations with a Regional Court Prosecutor, the suspect was arrested.

Bail was successfully opposed and the suspect remained in police custody until his trial in July 2017 in the Madadeni Regional Court, where he was found guilty.

The 57-year-old received three sentences for his crime of abuse.

They were as follows:

– Count one: Indecent assault (Old Act) – Two years imprisonment

– Count two: Rape (Old Act) – 15 years imprisonment

– Count three: Rape (New Act) – Life imprisonment.

Counts one, two and three will run concurrently.

The victim as well as her family welcomed the sentences.

They thanked the police, and especially Investigating Officer Sergeant Kubheka, for their dedication to the case.
