“I can’t talk right now my phone speaker is dead.” (sic) was the common phrase used by scammers to con people into sending money to them.
A woman, who opted to remain anonymous, approached the Newcastle Advertiser with such a scenario.
Upon closer investigation, revealed she had not been the only one who had fallen victim to such devious scam artists.
The resident took to social media to warn others of the experience. To her surprise, other victims recognised the scam and relayed their own stories. In most cases, the scammers used the same excuses to trap their victims into sending them cash.
They would then ask the ‘relative’ to send cash via cellphone banking.
