Snapchat to follow Vine into oblivion as WhatsApp is crowned texting king
Vine died a traditional Internet death after losing its subscriber base and having its plug slowly pulled by parent company Twitter
Who would have imagined! When Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook acquired Whatsapp for $19 billion, everyone thought both Facebook and Zuckerberg were crazy!
But not only has WhatsApp secured the texting environment, it has grabbed the coveted ‘Stories’ title from rival Snapchat, securing 250 million ‘Stories’ users. It’s these numbers that make WhatsApp the king, dwarfing Snapchat, who have only 166 million ‘Stories’ users in total.
With a billion total daily users and 1.3 billion monthly users, WhatsApp is the market leader. Over 55 billion messages are sent per day, including 4.5 billion photos and 1 billion videos.
Fears that Snapchat may follow in Vine’s footsteps and become a sad footnote in the Interwebs graveyard of good ideas seems like a premature prediction as of today.
But Snapchat will have to take a hard look at the marketplace and identify a niche other than the American teenager if it hopes to survive.
