Zululand District Municipality employees have now received their September salaries after a delay that left workers waiting for their monthly pay.

The municipality confirmed that all employees have been paid in full, following intervention by KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Rev Thulasizwe Buthelezi.

Provincial intervention resolves salary delay

Buthelezi instructed the department’s Head of Department, Scelo Duma, to intervene and ensure the matter was resolved within 48 hours.

The municipality acknowledged that the delay caused concern and financial pressure for employees who rely on their salaries to meet their monthly obligations.

Mayor Cllr Michael Khumalo said the municipality regretted the disruption and thanked employees for their patience while the matter was being resolved.

Measures introduced to prevent repeat

He said measures had been put in place to strengthen the salary payment process and prevent a repeat of the situation. These include tighter monitoring of payments, improved internal coordination and earlier identification of possible delays.

Buthelezi has warned that a repeat of the situation will not be tolerated, highlighting the impact delayed salaries can have on employees and their dependants, as well as the potential effect on service delivery.

“Our Head of Department and his team will continue with the investigation to establish the root cause and ensure that this does not happen again,” said Buthelezi.

Khumalo also confirmed that consequence management would follow due process once the investigation has been completed.

The municipality said management would continue monitoring the payment process to ensure employees receive their salaries on time and that lessons from the incident are acted upon.
