Two men accused of robbing a security guard at knife-point in 2016, were finally sentenced to jail terms on July 10, 2017.
According to reports, it is alleged that on the evening of April 21, 2016, two off-duty police officers were approached by the security guard, who informed them of the incident.
The guard was bleeding as a result of a stab wound to the hand, from when the suspects attacked and robbed him of his cellphone, while on his way to work.
Police quickly conducted a search operation, and soon found the men responsible for the robbery on the corner of Sutherland and Harding Streets.
“The men were found running into a parking lot, trying to escape the police. Two knives and the victim’s cellphone were found in their possession,” said Newcastle SAPS Marketing and Liaison Officer, Lizzy Arumugam.
Both suspects (26 and 27 years old) respectively, were charged with robbery and were kept in police custody for the duration of their trial.
Although the suspects applied for bail on numerous occasions, their applications were denied.
The Newcastle Regional Court found both suspects guilty, and the men received jail sentences of 8 years and 12 years respectively.
