Knife-wielding Ladysmith hijacker gets hefty prison sentence

A 21-year-old hijacker has been handed down a stiff prison sentence.

On February 28, the suspect held a woman at knife-point and hijacked the Hyundai she was driving in Saffa Street.

A second vehicle was hijacked by the same suspect after he crashed the Hyundai on the R103. A passerby driving a Toyota Hilux bakkie stopped to help and was also hijacked at knife-point.

The suspect was arrested while driving the Hilux bakkie.

He appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court yesterday (August 4), where he pleaded guilty.

He will spend an effective 15 years in prison for the crimes he committed.
