Criminals continue to plague shoppers in the CBD.
A resident contacted the Newcastle Advertiser on Monday, with regard to her experience as a victim of a snatch-and-grab last week.
The theft occurred in the Scott Street vicinity on July 28.
The resident explained she was wearing a traditional Indian outfit at the time, when an unknown number of assailants pulled her scarf up over her face.
With her vision obscured, the thieves yanked a chain from her neck.
The resident said she made use of the chain during numerous Hindu ceremonies, and said it had significant sentimental value to her.
She described the piece as gold, bearing the word ‘Aum’.
“It is my prayer chain. If anyone sees a chain of this description, please remember this item is stolen property.”
Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact Newcastle SAPS or the Advertiser, so the chain can be returned to its rightful owner.
Residents are cautioned to value their own life ahead of possessions.
In a press statement issued earlier this year, Newcastle SAPS provided the following tips to prevent becoming an easy target for criminals:
· Avoid wearing valuable jewellery or carrying large sums of money in public.
· Be alert and exercise situational awareness. Pay careful attention to who is around you.
· Leave your purse at home if possible. If you must carry one, carry the smallest you have.
· Know your destination and route, and how to get away in a hurry.
· Avoid text messaging or talking on the phone in public.
· Use the buddy system. If you must walk alone, choose an open, well-lit and well-travelled area.
· Avoid taking shortcuts through deserted areas including parks, playgrounds and vacant lots.
· If you believe you’re being followed, change direction or cross the street. If your pursuer persists, flee to the nearest public space.
· Never allow a stranger to follow you to your doorstep. Rather go somewhere public where you can contact the police.
