An accused convict was rearrested on August 2 for being in possession of an unlicensed 0.38 Rossi revolver and ammunition, after police searched his home in Madadeni.
According to Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer, Captain Jabulani Ncube, the Newcastle Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) received a tip-off about a man who was allegedly contemplating a series of armed robberies.
Upon further investigation, it was discovered the suspect had already served time in prison for prior armed robberies, and had only been out on parole for three days.
“The suspect had also managed to recruit five accomplices of both men and women, who were planning to commit the crimes with him.”
Police confiscated the firearms as well as Mandrax tablets, and the suspect along with his five accomplices were taken into police custody.
Police investigations are still underway to determine whether they are linked to other incidents of armed robbery.
“All six suspects are set to appear in the Madadeni Regional Court soon,” he concluded.
