Spring parties put residents in a ‘wintry’ mood

Residents say there 'is no law enforcement'

Spring has sprung and already residents in the McKenzie/Coronation/Handley Street area are bracing themselves for the next round of drunken parties in Coronation Park.
Irate residents who contacted the Courier yesterday afternoon said ‘there was a very loud party in the park with vehicles parked on the grass – at least one of which had a Mpumalanga registration number’.
“The police do not bother to come and chase them off so we do not even call the police any more. It is a waste of time. The municipality has put our rates astronomically but they cannot enforce basic laws like drinking in public, littering, loud music… obviously we must fend for ourselves and we will do so,” said one resident who declined to give details on what ‘measures’ residents will take.

This morning, the park was covered with green liquor bottles and other rubbish. Even the children’s play area was badly littered. By 8am this morning, three vehicles were already parked in the park, near the municipal storeroom, and a group of men were openly seen drinking and tossing their empties on to the grass.
Other residents who called the Courier said it was ironic ‘that parks in Peacevale, Forestdale and Sibongile were all fenced off but this one was a free for all’.
The municipality has been contacted for comment and updates will be published when a response is received.
