Quadruplets come as a surprise to Dumbe mother

Nobody was more surprised than she was, when she delivered not one, or two, or three… but four babies at the Vryheid Hospital.

JABULILE Sangweni went into labour last Wednesday praying for the safe birth of a healthy baby.

Nobody was more surprised than she was, when she delivered not one, or two, or three… but four babies at the Vryheid Hospital.

“I honestly didn’t know I was carrying four babies. I was surprised when the nurses told me I was carrying more than one child. I was really not expecting it. I didn’t know what to say. I was shocked, but I’m excited now,” said Jabulile.

In the meantime, professional nurse, Simphiwe Buthelezi, has been commended by KwaZulu-Natal’s Health MEC, Sibongiseni Dhlomo, and the Vryheid District Advisory Board for what is being described as “a miraculous delivery of quadruplets.”

Ms Buthelezi said she became aware that Jabulile may be carrying more than one baby when she examined her on her arrival to the maternity ward.

“When we helped her deliver her second baby, we were quite surprised to learn that there was a third baby coming,” said Ms Buthelezi.

“We then helped her deliver once more. Now, according to our training, triplets are far more common that quadruplets, so it would be easy to assume that the third baby was the last. But, when we checked, we discovered the fourth baby. We were truly, truly surprised.”

Jabulile resides in Dumbe and was transported to the Vryheid Hospital by ambulance at 7.30am that morning.

Her firstborn was a son, born at 8am and weighing 1.37kg. The three babies that were delivered thereafter were all girls. The first girl was born at 8.05am and weighed 0.880kg, the second girl was born at 8.10am and weighed 0.940kg and the third girl was born at 8.25am and weighed 1.1kg.

Jabulile and her four babies were later transferred to the Lower Umfolozi War Memorial Regional Hospital in Empangeni for specialist care.

Dr Dhlomo said it was a miracle that Jabulile was able to deliver quadruplets without incident.

“I would like to congratulate and thank Simphiwe Buthelezi and her team for the sterling job. A surprise of quadruplets in a district hospital, being so well-managed, is a miracle. We wish both the mother and the babies a good life.”

Chairperson of the Vryheid District Advisory Board, Ms TC Mdlalose, also extended her appreciation to the maternity staff at the Vryheid Hospital commending them for executing their duties professionally under extreme conditions.

“We understand that it was not going to be easy to perform such a delivery, particularly for a patient who only knew that she was going to deliver one baby. We would like to encourage pregnant women to make sure that they visit antenatal clinics as advised by the nurses,” she concluded.
