Thugs attempt to steal baby out of car seat

One of the men tried to yank the baby free from the car seat while the other began hacking at the seat-belt straps with a knife.

TWO men attempted to steal a one-year old baby out of a car seat on Monday evening.

Luckily, the quick, decisive actions of the brave mum likely saved the baby’s life. However, horror and panic set in later as the family contemplated the stories of children being kidnapped for human trafficking and body parts.

The mother, who asked not to be named, was driving home from the vicinity of Cecil Emmett at about 6.30pm with her baby strapped into a car seat next to her.

When she brought the car to a temporary stop at a red traffic light on East Street, two men wearing hoodies opened the car door on the front passenger side of the vehicle. One of the men tried to yank the baby free from the car seat while the other began hacking at the seat-belt straps with a knife.

“Usually, all the doors are locked,” said the baby’s grandmother. “But, when my daughter left her husband’s place of work, he had opened the door to give the baby a kiss.”

“My daughter’s husband is always reminding us that we should never park too close to the vehicle in front of us at intersections, in case something should happen. This advice may have saved the baby’s life. My daughter had enough space between her car and the vehicle in front of her for her to be able to swerve around the vehicle in front of her and speed off. The open car door hit one of the men, who fell into the street, but it happened so fast that she didn’t have a chance to get a good look at either of them.”

The grandmother concluded, “We need to realise that things like this do happen, even in Vryheid. Many of us have a false sense of security because we live in a small town. I advise all motorists in Vryheid to keep their car doors locked and the windows closed when they are driving. It is not safe for a woman to drive on her own in the evening so take someone with you.”
