CANSA Relay raises R127 000

Together with generous donations and the funds from the ninth annual CanSA Relay for Life held on September 2 and 3, Estcourtonians helped raise R127 000 to support the fight against cancer.

The cheque was set to be handed over to CanSA’s Community Mobiliser Bruce Kenneth, but unfortunately, during the presentation function held at the Forderville Primary School Hall on Wednesday evening, he contacted Event Chairperson Anil Sookraj to say he was unable to attend.

In the presence of the Estcourt Cancer Support Group and the CanSA Relay for Life team captains, the function proceeded with Mr Sookraj highlighting the success of the event. Mr Sookraj also welcomed the compliments he received and spoke of the touching testimonies that were shared.

“We did get lots of compliments but also complaints. We can’t please everyone but we need to focus on the positive and move forward to doing better,” he said.

He went on to thank his right-hand men and women (the Estcourt Cancer Support Group) and added that the community is already anticipating the 10th CanSA Relay. 2 500 people legally participated in the Relay with 35 registered teams signed up to represent schools, businesses, sporting groups, churches and, family and friends.

The income was brought in with a raffle, the 2017 CanSA Relay and donations. With that said, he announced that R127 000 will be deposited into the CanSA account.
