Learner gunned down in Emmaus

Police confirmed on Monday afternoon that the gunman drew a firearm and shot and killed the 20-year-old learner

The small town of Emmaus in Bergville reverberated with shock on Monday when a grade 12 learner was shot while on his way to school with a friend to write an examination.

The matric learner was shot and killed, allegedly by a man who had a disagreement with the pair.

Police confirmed on Monday afternoon that the gunman drew a firearm and shot and killed the 20-year-old learner.

“The suspect fled the scene. The deceased has not yet been identified,” commented police spokesperson Captain Charmaine Struwig.

She added that a case of murder is being investigated by Bergville Detectives.

Adding his voice to the murder, Democratic Alliance (DA) Member of Parliament Alf Lees strongly condemned the ‘senseless murder.’

“The DA urges the family and friends of the slain learner to allow the law to takes its course and for the police to urgently ensure that the murderer is arrested and charged immediately,” he added.
