Government officials will now participate in Cultural Thursdays – a platform to discuss cultural issues to ensure those future generations ‘correctly copy traditions and practices’.
This was said by Khulekani Selepe of the Department of Arts and Culture who was addressing warders at a Heritage Day celebration at Glencoe Prison.
He added that this is the Department’s way of ‘educating communities on the importance of culture and heritage.’ A booklet has also been published on how to raise a child.
Government officials are encouraged to take part in this initiative by sending e-mails and sharing and discussing cultural information every Thursday.

NTA Mabizela, the Acting Area Commissioner in the Glencoe Management Area, emphasised the importance of celebrating Heritage Month. In her welcoming speech, she said: “As a Department of Correctional Services it is important to embrace and respect our diversity.”
She said heritage aimed at uniting South Africans as people of one nation irrespective of race, colour, creed and orientation.
“Heritage contributes to the education of youth with a special emphasis on art, culture and heritage in the teaching and learning situation.”
