A celebration of light over darkness

"Diwali grows on you each year and we should go all out to celebrate it with enthusiasm"

The annual Diwali celebration was held at the Swami Sahajananda Community Centre on Saturday. Diwali or Deepavali is one of the major celebrations on the Hindu and Tamil calendars and its lesson of light triumphing over darkness and good over evil is one that was echoed by the speakers.

Guest musician Keeran Eshwarlal and his band provided soulful sounds and soon had the crowd clapping and singing along to their beats.

President of the Estcourt Hindu Cultural Society Sudarshan Bandu got the function kicked off with welcoming everyone present and thanking Minority Front leadership Shameen Thakur-Rajbansi and Vimmi Ramdass for attending.

Mr Bandu said that Diwali unified the entire world with goodwill, love and charity and encouraged all present to observe the lessons taught by the Diwali story. Guest speaker Mrs Thakur-Rajbansi called Diwali an ‘amazing time’ of the year. “Diwali grows on you each year and we should go all out to celebrate it with enthusiasm,” she said.

The former pharmacist turned politician spoke about Lord Rama’s journey, which is detailed in the Ramayan, asking all present to familairise themselves with the challenges and triumphs faced by Lord Rama as these are prevalent in our lives today.
Mrs Thakur-Rajbansi explained that the six most important ‘compartments’ in our lives should be family, work, community, physical self, mental state and spirituality.

To conclude she said: “Celebrating Diwali keeps you evergreen as a child. Have a happy Diwali and be safe with fireworks.”

Thereafter the attendees settled down to the melodious sounds of Keeran Eshwarlal and his band and thereafter supper was served.

Rathan Rajkumar entertained the crowd with songs.
