A mountain of bras following uplifting clarion call

Alice explained, “…if everyone just decided to do one thing, imagine what we could collectively achieve… one drop starts a flood…”.

Durban businesswoman and entrepreneur Alice Leah had no idea what was coming when she asked her Facebook friends to help her collect “some” bras for underprivileged teenage girls. In August, she had attended a VIP children’s day at the Durban Exhibition Centre for 41 children’s homes, and it was there that she noticed that most of the teenage girls were not wearing bras. Calling on her circle of family, friends and business associates, she urged everyone to collect and donate their gently used bras for the cause and hashtagged it #bringthebras.

And that’s exactly what’s been happening for the past three months! Alice has been drowning in bras of all shapes, sizes and colours and they just keep coming in. Local lingerie store Satin Candy (with stores in Kloof and Durban North) embraced the call and asked their customers to donate their pre-loved bras to the cause and in exchange offered them R75 off a new bra. This proved particularly successful and they amassed almost ten black bags full for #bringthebras – a veritable mountain of bras!

When asked why she decided to get involved and do something, instead of just turning a blind eye as most people would have done, Alice explained, “…if everyone just decided to do one thing, imagine what we could collectively achieve… one drop starts a flood…”.

The finer details and logistics of the distribution have yet to be worked out, but if you would like to assist Alice, by donating bras or helping to get them to where they need to go, please email alice@thealist.co.za.
