10 Reasons the Sharks should win the Currie Cup

The 'Shark Tank' is expected to host a classic this Saturday, when the 2017 Currie Cup takes place between the Sharks and Western Province.

1. They’re long overdue: It’s been four years since they last won it … that’s a long, long time for Sharks fans with high expectations. So long some may have forgotten who we beat in 2013. Ironically, it was Western Province.

2. They’re at home: The Shark Tank will be buzzing, that’s for sure. There’s no doubt that in rugby, of all sports, home teams seem to benefit from crowd support.

3. Jean-Luc and Daniel du Preez: The twin brother loose-forwards are emerging as players of immense power, skill and tenacity.

4. Robert du Preez: The coach, that is, and father of the three Du Preez boys. He’s a man on the up, having rejuvenated the Sharks to a large extent. Not many coaches have also won it as a player. Seems written in the stars.

5. Robert du Preez: The son, that is. Sure, he is playing fly-half for Western Province, but if he wants to see any game time next year, when he’ll be in the Sharks camp, he’d better not pop over a winning penalty in the dying moments. Truth be told, from reports, it seems he would love nothing better than to do just exactly that. Competitive bloke.

6. Curwin Bosch: Every man and his dog can see there’s something special about this guy. As long as he’s not left to tackle some monstrous lock or prop, he should prove to be a matchwinner.

7. Ruan Botha: ‘Who’ you may ask? He’s the captain, and maybe not too well known, but he has a sense of calm that’s reassuring.

8. Akker van der Merwe: He’s got one of the coolest names for a rugby player. And is explosive off the bench. Wouldn’t be surprised if he darts through a melee to score a match-winning try.

9. Louis Schreuder: The gutsy scrum-half is a former Western Province and Stormers player. But he’s improved out of sight since coming to Durban. He’d love to get one over his former teammates.

10: Thomas du Toit: The burly prop is someone who can stand up to Province’s Wilco Louw. That battle alone is worth the entry fee.
