Indiscriminate dumping throughout the municipal area is getting up the noses of ratepayers who have been dealt with huge rates increases since July 1 and are demanding a ‘better deal’.
Glencoe residents who contacted the Courier complained of the illegal dumping of building and garden waste and refuse in the middle of the residential area in the vicinity of Acacia Street.
Dr Zahiera Bodiat, who lives in the area, said she and her husband had called the municipality but ‘still nothing has been done to stop this activity nor a sign erected to deter illegal dumping.’

“I have on numerous occasions caught young men bearing wheelbarrows full of building waste and dumping it. When questioned they tell me they have been instructed by their employers to do so. There are numerous building works going on in the vicinity of Biggarstreet North but it is really infuriating to see such disrespect for a residential area with all the dumping and disposal in the small vacant plot between our homes,” Dr Bodiat said. “Surely there are regulations to be adhered to and the town landfill site which should be used. This is a sight for sore eyes and I appeal to the municipality to look into this urgently.”
Asked for comment, Ward 7 Councillor, Dr Sandy Bedassi, said he was very concerned about illegal dumping and had escalated the complaint to the senior manager at the municipality who he said ‘would be attending to the matter’.
In Dundee, residents near Cosmos Street have also complained about the dumping of building rubble and domestic rubbish. Residents said the dumping is spoiling their neighbourhood and also called for urgent action. The Ward 2 Committee will be taking this matter up and if need be, forward the complaint to the Umzinyathi District Municipality who are responsible for health and cleanliness.
