PREVIEW: Public Works Portfolio Committee builds new foundation for local education

“These facilities were to ensure that the children received education in conditions suitable for teaching and learning.”

Public Works Portfolio Committee, led by its Chairperson, Hon Mbali Frazer, conducted its oversight work by visiting Siyamukela and Sizanani High Schools in Newcastle on October 31.

Senior Communications Officer, Mr W. Canham, said the R33m project at Sizanani High, which included the renovation of the dormitories, the kitchen, the dining hall, and the gymnasium, was reported to have been completed by October 22.

“However, the R28m project at Siyamukela will only be completed by October 2019.”

This project included the following structures to be constructed:

– Four standard classrooms,

– Three multipurpose classrooms,

– A media centre,

– A computer room,

– A kitchen,

– Team teaching facility,

– An admin block,

– Ablution facilities,

– A guard house,

– Electric lighting,

– Data for telephones.

A combi-court, netball court, soccer field, chess garden and water tanks are also being built.

This work also included the partial demolition of three existing classroom blocks, down to the window levels.
