Ladysmith motorists beware: New heavy fines come into effect

Anyone caught talking or texting on a cell-phone while driving is liable for a fine of R1500

Public Safety have confirmed that the Chief Magistrate for the Klipriver District has approved new ‘Admission of Guilt’ fines for various traffic offences, which came into effect on November 1.

Several fines were changed; one of the most notable was the fact that if a motorist breaks the speed limit in a 60km/h zone by 91km/h or more, then no admission of guilt fine is payable, as the offender will be immediately arrested. Any person allowing an unlicensed person to drive a Code B vehicle (car) is liable for a fine of R3000.

Anyone allowing an unlicensed driver to drive a Code C1 vehicle (taxi or small commercial vehicle) is liable for a fine of R4000.

Anyone caught talking or texting on a cell-phone while driving is liable for a fine of R1500.
