There is nothing for mahala. So said education manager in the district, T Phakathi, who was addressing learners and parents at the Dundee Junior prize-giving ceremony.
“To be successful at work, at school and at sport you have to work hard. Nothing is free. You have to action to get a reaction,” he said. With that, he hauled out two money notes and waved them towards the seated learners in the hall.
“Who wants this money?” he asked. There was a moment’s hesitation and then Wickus Coetzee and Chezaan van Rensburg came storming up to the podium, hardly noticing the sea of faces staring up at them as they willingly took the money from Mr Phakathi.
Mr Phakathi was quite happy to hand out the money. “See if you want to achieve something (in this case money) you have to go out and get it – take action, like these two did.”
And it was on that note that the school took action in awarding their top achievers of the year:
Dux: Andre Niemann; Comradeship: Mumtaz Malek; All-Rounder’s Trophy (sport, culture and academics): Chezaan van Rensburg; Ambassador’s Trophy: Headgirl: Mumtaz Malek and headboy: Renier van Rensburg.
