18-year-old kidnapped from Maphumulo

Last Wednesday, during a crime prevention operation at Emmaus in Bergville, members from Public Order Policing (POP) discovered that an 18-year-old woman was kidnapped.
The driver of a sliver Renault motor vehicle was stopped when police noticed that the only female seated between two men was upset. They proceeded questioned her in private.

During the interview she reported that while she was visiting her sister in Maphumulo near Kranskop the suspects approached her and brought her to Bergville by force. She also informed the police that they had told her she was to marry one of the suspects.
The suspects aged 28, 37, 38 and 42 were promptly arrested on charges of kidnapping and appeared before the Bergville Magistrate’s Court on January 4.
The docket will be sent to the Maphumulo police station for further investigation of the case. The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended the members for rescuing the victim.
“I thank the members for their alertness that led to the arrest of the suspects. We cannot tolerate people who are allegedly kidnapping women with the intention of forcing them to marry these criminals. There is no place for ‘ukuthwa’ in our society anymore,” he said.
