Protest action leads to postponement of marathon
Rocks and logs strewn across roads, signs destroyed

Protest action in the Rorke’s Drift area which has seen roads blocked and road signs destroyed has prompted the committee of Biggarsberg Athletics Club to announce that they are forced to cancel the Shiyane Rorke’s Drift race that is scheduled for this coming Saturday.
“We fear for the safety of our runners. We will consult with KZNA (athletics) today to see if we might be able to get a later date. But we will keep you informed regarding this. If you have pre-entered for this race, please email me your banking details in order for us to refund you the fee you have paid. We really do apologize for any inconvience this might cause,” said BBAC’s Lani van der Mescht.
Farmers and tour guides in the area said rocks and logs had been strewn across the road near Nxala Lodge, the Rorke’s Drift Hotel and on the road to Fugitives Drift Lodge.
It was reported that tourists booked into lodges in the area could not get in or out.
It is believed the protest is because a promise to bring electricity to the area has not materialised. The area falls under the Msinga Municipality. It is not clear if the promise was made by Eskom or the Municipality.
Farmers said rocks were also thrown at vehicles. Police were monitoring the situation.
The Isandlwana area falls under the Nquthu Municipality area and tour guide, Evan Jones, said that area was accessible on Wednesday.
Saturday sees the re-enactment of the battle of Isandlwana to commemorate the anniversary of the battle in 1879. On Monday, the annual football friendly between the Zulu Zebras and Redcoats is to be held at Rorke’s Drift to coincide with the anniversary of that battle. Updates on the situation to follow.
