“Rising to new heights” – in the Drakensberg. This was the backdrop for Dundee High School’s prefect camp from January 8-10
After dodging and diving, trying to find tar between the potholes, the adventure started off on a heated note, with the mid-afternoon heat resulting in teams not being able to do much. But in the shade, building bridges, literally and figuratively, was the order of the day.
Spaghetti and tape were used as mediums to build bridges that were supposed to hold at least five kilograms. And then the heavens erupted, setting the tone for the rest of the camp…..slippery, slimy and wet. After a good rainstorm teams then got together to complete various tasks in order to win the first points on offer for the day. After a satisfying meal in the evening, playing lego was in order, teaching the prefects of 2018 to keep their eyes on the details.
Die volgende oggend is die prefekte gegroet met mis en reën, maar dit het definitief nie die gees gedemp nie. Toue en bome het seker gemaak dat sekere prefekte (kug-kug) met moeite en ‘n baie groot gesukkel oor hulle vrese gekom het, tesame met ‘n nuutgeboude spangees, veral as daar “baba’s” betrokke is.
Na middagete het die prefekte die koue water aangedurf vir ‘n rondte boot-waterpolo. Ongelukkig kon almal nie droog bly in hulle bote nie en ‘n hele paar spanne het kennis gemaak met die koue Drakensberg water. Die aand is natuurlik prettig gemaak, waar waarneming en goeie raaiskote koning gekraai het.
On the day of the last morning, the prefects got to face their fears with a 10m high climbing wall, as well as taking pot shots with bow and arrow. The competition escalated quickly to fire an arrow into the “bull’s eye”.
This resulted in some good banter amongst teams. Finally, the camp drew to a close and 28 tired bodies and minds passed out in the buses on the way home.
DHS’s Hope Mkhize – best female boxer of 2017
At the end of last year, Hope Mkhize travelled to Johannesburg to represent KZN at the national Sanabo boxing tournament. Hope started taking part in boxing events about two years ago when she heard that it is a healthy way to get rid of unnecessary stress and aggression. She quickly realised that she has a natural flair for this sport and she now travels across the country to represent the province.
Hope quickly made it through to the finals where she had to face her opponent, Jamani Azasazakhe from the Eastern Cape.
They went through three rounds of boxing and Hope was victorious with a convincing win at the end of the match.
She was awarded Best Female Boxer of 2017 on School Level Tournaments and she also finished first in her weight and age category.
