Alfred Duma Local Municipality presented awards to the top 50 achieving matriculants within this municipality on Thursday last week (January 18).
The annual event took place at the Town Hall, where the ‘Class of 2017’ gathered with family and teachers to be awarded with certificates and tokens for the high marks they obtained in their final examinations.
Speaking at the event, Mayor Vincent Madlala congratulated the Class of 2017 on their achievements.
He also spoke at length about the municipality’s achievements when it comes to awarding bursaries and assisting students with registration into tertiary institutions.
“We started the year on a sad note as we heard of the passing of a former LHS matriculant who died in a car accident, along with her brother.
“It is sad to learn that they were in pursuit of higher education in Bloemfontein when they died.
“We later learned that her mother died as well, as a result of the accident.
“We pass our sincerest condolences to friends and family,” said Mayor Vincent Madlala.
A moment of silence was held in their memory.
Messages of support were delivered by representatives from NYDA, Eskom and the Department of Education.
The Top Achieving Matriculant award went to Mandisa Xaba, who not only was top within the municipality but also in the country under Quintile 3 schools. What an achievement! The award was collected in her absence.
