The cost of the storm: one dead, three missing, 117 people affected

Residents are praying that the children will be found alive

The cost of Thursday evenings devastating storm is still being counted.  B Zulu, Endumeni Disaster Manager, told the Courier yesterday evening that the man whose body was found in the Steenkoolspruit behind Dundee Secondary had still not been identified.

The three children, who were washed away after getting into difficulties near the home in the Livangeli area, behind Sibongile, are still missing.  It is thought that in the confusion of the driving rain and hail, they stumbled into a flooded stream.

They were named as girls,  Melokuhle Steele (10), Kholeka Khumalo (5) and boy, Ayabonga Steele (8).

Police and volunteers have scoured the area looking for the children but up until now there have been no positive reports. Preshu Singh of the 360 Racing Boys and his crew yesterday donated food and other goods to the family.

The official report says 30 homes were affected with  five totally destroyed.  Sibongile, Dundee central, Peacevale, Craigside, Mpati, Lindelani and the area near the Greytown road were the hardest hit.

117 were affected with reports still coming in.

Cleaning up operations are continuing and with more rain likely today and Sunday, locals are hoping that the weather will give them time to put their lives back together.
