Anxious families wait for news of the recovery of their loved ones

It is thought that at least one body may been recovered but this is yet to be confirmed

Families are still waiting for news for what now appears to be a recovery operation rather than a rescue.

It was reported earlier today than at least one of the bodies of the three children who were washed away on Thursday evening has been recovered.  However, this is yet to be confirmed.

The three children washed away after getting into difficulties near the home in the Livangeli area, behind Sibongile, are still missing.  It is thought that in the confusion of the driving rain and hail, they stumbled into a flooded stream.

They were named as girls,  Melokuhle Steele (10), Kholeka Khumalo (5) and boy, Ayabonga Steele (8).

A search operation with volunteers helping is planned for today.  More news will be provided as updates come in.

Yesterday’s search for Dr Ncube, whose Renault vehicle was washed away on Thursday evening, also proved fruitless.

His wife, Sifiso, and members of the New Life Church and the Courier assisted in the search, scouring about 5km down the flooded Nyanyadu River which eventually flows into the Buffalo River.

Dr Ncube, who lived next to the Hospital on McKenzie Street, was driving home on Thursday evening when he attempted to drive over the flooded stream on the Ngsiane Road near Aviemore Colliery.

His car was washed downstream. The mud-filled Renault was recovered but there has been no sign of a body.

Late yesterday a team from the Ladysmith Search and Rescue Unit arrived but they also had no luck.
