Al-Imdaad Foundation UK helps needy community in Loskop

The school now uses the water facilities for sanitation, drinking water and the preparation of school meals

On January 17 2018, the Al-Imdaad Foundation was part of a special Back-2-School programme in Inkosi Langalibalele Municipality that saw the handover of a borehole at Phutini Secondary School in the rural Loskop area.

The borehole was sponsored by Al-Imdaad Foundation‘s United Kingdom office and its volunteers, who had fundraised for the project in the United Kingdom.

It was officially handed over by the Al-Imdaad Foundation’s United Kingdom Country Director Abdusamad Moola, together with the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Mr Willies Mchunu.

Local officials and representatives of the Al-Imdaad Foundation were also present for the handover. Expressing gratitude to Al-Imdaad Foundation and its United Kingdom office’s volunteers, the Premier said: “We are grateful to all of you, we are grateful to Al-Imdaad for taking the initiative, but we are mostly grateful to those who have heeded the call of Al-Imdaad to come to the assistance of humanity.”

Phutini High School was originally identified in partnership with the provincial disaster war rooms to receive a borehole as part of the Al-Imdaad Foundation‘s drought relief efforts. This school had been identified as one of the most deprived schools in KwaZulu-Natal and had previously failed to meet the minimum standards and regulations for learning centres as set out in the South African School’s Act.

With the sponsorship of its United Kingdom office, the Al-Imdaad Foundation had completed a borehole at the school together with pumps, water filters, Jojo tanks and taps. Al-Imdaad Foundation’s United Kingdom Country Director, Abdusamad Moolla, who was present at the programme, explained that for six months, the volunteers had fundraised from door-to-door, with the intention to help South African communities and “make them smile”.

The school now uses the water facilities for sanitation, drinking water and the preparation of school meals. Additionally, a tap installed at the boundary fence of the property allows the surrounding community to benefit from the borehole as well.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Mr Willies Mchunu drinks water from the borehole sponsored by Al-Imdaad Foundation’s United Kingdom office during the official hand over for the project at the Phutini Secondary school in Loskop.

Head of Department for South African projects, Abed Karim, explained that the borehole and four 5 000 litre water tanks sponsored by donors from the United Kingdom, mean that the school and surrounding community now have 20 000 litres of water available at any given time.
