Stolen livestock recovered
Three cows were found inside the vehicle tied up in a gruesome manner.
IN THE early hours of the morning, on February 1, Mondlo police officers were involved in an alleged shootout with armed suspects and recovered three cows that had been stolen.
The cattle had been reported missing to the Mondlo police station by Mr Mthandeni Mazibuko from the Emadwaleni area.
Mr Mazibuko reported that he had seen a certain vehicle leaving his homestead and he suspected that his cattle had been loaded onto the vehicle.
The Community Service Centre members, Consts SS Simelane and TA Zulu, quickly responded to the report and went out to patrol around the area.
While still patrolling, these officers came across the said vehicle and tried to flag it down but the driver is said to have sped off.
The officers gave chase and the suspects allegedly started firing shots.
The police then retaliated, the vehicle driven by the suspects landed in a ditch and they fled on foot.
Upon closer investigation, the vehicle was found to be a Toyota Hilux bakkie with a canopy.
Three cows were found inside the vehicle tied up in a gruesome manner.
Bush knives, kitchen knives, river boots and overalls, (believed to have been brought along to use to slaughter the cows) were also found inside the vehicle.
The vehicle was impounded and the stolen cattle were identified by their owner.
The matter is currently under investigation.
