Former Sarel head boy contracted to Griffins Rugby team

"I am enjoying every minute of this challenge and have tremendous support from my parents"

Kevin Johnson could soon be lining up with some of the top rugby players in the country. The 19-year-old former Sarel Cilliers head boy has just been contracted to the Griffins Rugby under 20 team that plays in the Currie Cup. Players from the Griffins are eligible for selection to the Cheetahs Super Rugby team, along with players from the Free State Cheetahs and Griquas.
The Griffins currently play in the First Division of the Currie Cup, attracting crowds of around 4 000 to home games at North West Stadium in Welkom. Their traditional rivals are the Free State Cheetahs and North West Province Leopards.
Kevin recently played in the Sarel Cilliers Rugby Day where he lined up for a reunion match featuring Sarel old boys who played against Sentraal.
The Courier caught up with the softly-spoken giant of a lad who said he was immensely proud to have been asked to join the Griffins who play out of Welkom. “It will mean a bit of drive from Bloemfontein where I am studying a B. Ed degree but I know any sacrifice now will pay dividends in the future,” Kevin said.
He matriculated in 2016 and is keen to be a teacher – hence his chosen degree path. He juggles a strenuous routine of gym training, rugby sessions and studying.
“I am enjoying every minute of this challenge and have tremendous support from my parents, Des and Sandra.” Able to play either at flank or lock, Kevin Johnson could soon be a name we will hear more of on the rugby field.
