#AsbestosMustFall at Estcourt Secondary School

Studies show how hazardous asbestos can be and that the infections caused by it are irreversible

Estcourt Secondary School is growing more concerned of the rotting roof at the school hostel. Almost two weeks ago the school lost four classrooms in a fire and now the harmful asbestos material roofing at the school’s hostel adds to the challenges facing the school.

As a result of recent rain, the aged roof is badly damaged; this has seen water seeping into the building causing the floors to swell up and in some parts sink in.

Acting Principal, Ms MM Jordan has made numerous attempts to source help from the relevant departments and is currently awaiting responses. Recently the local building inspectors had a look at the crumbling roof.

The hostel had to close its doors in 2015 due to its deteriorating condition. Since asbestos had been banned in South Africa, only certified asbestos removal specialists are allowed to repair, remove or handle the substance.

For this reason, the school had to ensure that only if the hostel has to be used that the first storey houses the learners, as the second storey is directly above them and they would not make direct contact with the asbestos roof.

The asbestos has to be removed in order for the environment to be safe for learners and staff.
