Employees from Shoprite at the Village Walk shopping centre in Newcastle are striking because of alleged poor working conditions and wage disputes.

On March 28, the employees from Shoprite started participating in a nationwide strike demanding better working conditions.
Employees picketed outside the Village Walk shopping centre protested with slogans like #Shopritemustfall, and #36Hoursmustfall to show their disappointment with alleged harsh working conditions, long hours and poor wages.
“The strike is still rather peaceful, but should the workers turn violent at any time, we as center management will have to bring in the authorities to ensure the safety of our clients,” centre management said to the Newcastle Advertiser.
The strike is scheduled to continue on until Friday, March 30.
