Update: Woman recovering well after being targeted by card cloners

The still shaken woman appeals to the community to be vigilant and extra careful when using ATMs

The 23-year-old woman who was targeted by card cloners at a busy shopping centre in Ladysmith on Wednesday, March 28, is out of hospital and recovering at home.

The young lady was in ICU after her traumatic ordeal. Due to her being diabetic, the shock of what she went through caused her health to deteriorate.

It is believed that two men approached the woman while she was using an ATM. She cleverly entered an incorrect PIN number and seeing that their plan was not working, they grabbed her handbag.

The still shaken woman appeals to the community to be vigilant at all times when using ATMs in town.

Police are also appealing to the community to exercise caution when using an ATM, no matter the area.

They advise:

Try to use ATMs that are situated in well-lit, secure areas where cameras are available.

When you remove your card from the machine, you should check to make sure it is indeed your card.

You  should never use an ATM with a blank screen, and if the ATM is obscured from view or poorly lit, leave immediately and find another ATM.

Before you use an ATM, run your finger along the card slot to feel if there are any foreign objects.

You should look around at the machine to see if anything has been tampered with, changed or added.

You should also be wary of strangers asking for help.

Criminals sometimes work in teams – one to distract you while the other steals your card or money.
