Friday the 13th: 13 superstitions that could bring bad luck

Hopefully you have a four-leaf clover, rabbit's foot or horse shoe in your pocket to ward off bad luck!

Today is Friday the 13th, which means only one thing: bad luck could be lurking around every corner.

Friday the 13th is still talked about in these modern times as being an unlucky date. This evidently dates back hundreds of years, with the tradition said to have begun in the Middle Ages or even Biblical times.

Here are 13 spooky and freaky superstitions associated with Friday the 13th…

1. Black cats: We all know that for centuries, these “feline fiends” have been linked to witchcraft, so it’s no surprise that many have created a superstition that if you cross the path of a black cat on Friday the 13th, you are doomed!

2. Purses: You should never leave your purse on the floor if you want to avoid bad luck.

3. The total 6.66: If a bill totals R6.66 or you receive that much change, you should either buy something else or leave a few cents from your change to avoid bad luck. Luckily there are no six cent coins out there!

4. Cutting your hair: If you cut your hair on Friday the 13th, then superstition says someone in your family will die.

5. Funerals: If a funeral procession passes you on Friday the 13th, you will be the next to die or have bad luck for the rest of your life.

6. Cemeteries: To avoid bad luck when passing a cemetery, you’re supposed to hold your breath until you see a black or brown dog.

7. Salt: If you spill salt, you’re supposed to throw it over your shoulder to avoid bad luck.

8. Getting out of bed: To avoid bad luck, get out of bed on the same side as you got in.

9. Number 13: Many believe the number 13 is bad luck.

10. Ladders: People quote this superstition all the time, saying that walking under a ladder is a “no no”.

11. Floor 13: This superstition is so widely believed that many hotels or buildings will skip floor 13.

12. Babies: A child born on Friday the 13th is said to be unlucky for life. However, actors Mary Kate and Ashley Olson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Steve Buscemi were all born on Friday the 13th. They’re pretty successful, so where did the bad luck go?

13. Mirrors: If you break a mirror, you can kiss 7 years of good luck goodbye, or at least that’s what many believe.

Hopefully you have a four-leaf clover, rabbit’s foot or horse shoe in your pocket to ward off bad luck!
