MEC deploys hundreds of officers to ensure smooth election travel

The officers will monitor traffic at over 5000 voting stations across KZN.

MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma has announced that 688 Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and Operation Shanela teams have been deployed across KwaZulu-Natal to ensure that communities remain safe tomorrow (November 4).

Duma further noted that the deployment also took into account the possibility of road rage and traffic-related altercations due to heightened political activities.

“Our dedicated officers will ensure that there is safe and efficient movement of six million voters and election officials who will travel to 5028 voting stations,” he said.

Deployed throughout the province, Duma said the dedicated officers would ensure that everyone experiences a safe and secure voting environment.

Key routes to receive attention

Some of the areas that will receive attention will be as follows:

  • N2 Pongola to Nyoni
  • N2 KwaDukuza to Umgababa
  • N3 Van Reenen to Bergville
  • N11 Newcastle to Ladysmith
  • R102 Empangeni to Gungundlovu
  • R618 Mtubatuba to Nongoma
  • R33 Greytown to Msinga
  • R74 Bergville to Winterton
  • R56 Richmond to Kokstad

Officers to execute #NenzaniLaEzweni operation

The team will execute the #NenzaniLaEzweni operation and focus on the following:

  • The disruption of traffic and road closures by unauthorised individuals will not be tolerated and will be dealt with swiftly;
  • Monitor traffic flow, respond to hot-spots and ensure visibility by patrolling major access routes;
  • Work with municipal traffic departments by providing escorts for SAPS and IEC officials where necessary;
  • Enforce traffic laws and the promotion of road safety.

“We appeal to motorists to be patient and slow down near voting stations because of expected heavy foot traffic,” said Duma.

“We wish to advise motorists and voters to allow additional travel time in order to avoid speeding and road crashes,” he concluded.
