Amazing Italian opportunity for two DHS athletes
During the Easter holidays, the first rugby team had the opportunity to attend the “Best of the West Easter Festival” in Krugersdorp.
Bongumenzi Ntuli and Jan-Frederik van Zyl excel in rugby
DHS congratulats these two DHS athletes who were selected to represent a national team which will go on tour to Italy in December 2018. This is an amazing accomplishment and the boys will travel to Venice, Padua, Florence and Rome. Exceptional talent was portrayed on the tour that the boys attended in April. Obviously, this tour is extremely expensive and the boys have already started raising money for their tour fees that adds up to R30 000 each. Please feel free to support these young aspiring athletes. For more information contact the school.
First Team Rugby Tour
During the Easter holidays, the first rugby team had the opportunity to attend the “Best of the West Easter Festival” in Krugersdorp. With lots of excitement, they departed for the unknown, as this was the first time any school from KZN would be attending this festival. Thursday was their first match against Queens High School. Unfortunately, things didn’t go their way and they lost 17 – 12, with the team struggling to find each other. This was a real eye-opener, and they realised that they had to step it up.
The following day, they got to spend the whole day at Gold Reef City for some fun and introspection. Saturday, was their second match of the festival and they played against Soweto Rugby Academy.
No, ladies and gentlemen, this is not some development team. It has delivered five Craven Week players in the last two years, and once again DHS went into the match as the underdogs. In a tough match, with the boys showing some real guts and determination, they managed to pull the result through, winning 12 – 10. They got to spend the rest of the day watching the other teams and matches. That afternoon the players got to meet Mr van Blerk, a former Maritzburg College teacher, and now principal at Krugersdorp High School, who told stories of how the KZN schools always played a different brand of rugby compared to the Gauteng schools, and that he was happy to see their fighting spirit after the first match disappointment.
Monday morning, the whole hostel was abuzz with the atmosphere resembling that of a derby day. The pavilions were packed with spectators. This is what rugby is all about – big matches. The stands were quickly silenced with huge tackles coming in from the DHS team, and the boys really putting their bodies on the line. At the final whistle, the boys managed to win the game 5 – 0.
