The International Museum Day was established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977, to spread the message of the importance of museums by a way of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding and cooperation and peace among people.

It also increases awareness of the role of museums in the development of society in terms of heritage knowledge and sharing, standards of excellence and partnerships.

“The Africans have lost what they have in the past: ubuntu/humanity, dignity and tolerance, indigenous knowledge systems, for example. traditional art skills through many factors. Therefore, this event is to facilitate and revive African values using art and museum as a multi-language that is understood by everyone. The main objectives are to facilitate awareness and promote solidarity, social cohesion and expose artists’ talents to the public. It is also to encourage artists to work collaboratively, sharing knowledge skills and to participate in art competitions and art residencies,” said curator Phumzile Dlamini.

Some artworks and craft will also be up for sale. For more information, contact the office on 034 328 7622.
