Watch: Australian woman airlifted to safety from Drakensberg after falling ill

The woman was airlifted from the Drakensberg to a hospital in Ladysmith

A 57-year-old Australian woman was airlifted to safety this morning (May 31) after she fell ill in the Drakensberg.

It is believed that the woman started to feel sick yesterday afternoon while hiking in the Drakensberg mountains.

She was airlifted to a hospital in Ladysmith.

NKZN Mountain Rescue, Westline Aviation and Freddie Halgreen (Okhahlamba Fire & Emergency Services) accompanied the patient to Ladysmith High School (LHS), where the helicopter landed.

Once they arrived at LHS, they were assisted by ER24 paramedics and a nurse from a hospital in Ladysmith.

The Australian woman was treated for dehydration and acute mountain sickness before being taken to a local hospital for further medical treatment.
