Local wrestlers inspired by world-class wrestling coach

Young wrestlers gain valuable experience under the guidance of an international wrestling expert.

The Rhinos Wrestling Club hosted its second Sonic Tournament on July 6, bringing together wrestlers from Glencoe, Newcastle, Volksrust, Vryheid and Richards Bay for a day of competition and development.

International coach visits tournament

A highlight of the tournament was the visit by internationally respected wrestling coach Vincent Aka-Akesse, whose presence gave young wrestlers and local coaches the opportunity to learn from one of the sport’s most experienced figures.

Aka-Akesse, originally from Côte d’Ivoire, is a Sports and Development Officer for United World Wrestling, based in Switzerland. His work focuses on developing and promoting wrestling across Africa and around the world.

Before moving into coaching and development, the 50-year-old competed as a heavyweight freestyle wrestler for both France and Côte d’Ivoire. During his career, he won medals at major continental and international competitions and attended five Olympic Games – three as an athlete, one as a coach and one as an official.

His visit to the tournament inspired many of the young wrestlers, while local coaches also benefited from his wealth of knowledge and international experience.

Supporting the next generation

The club also acknowledged the continued support of Orange Grove Dairy, which sponsored a juice and a medal for every wrestler who took part in the tournament.

Organisers said the Sonic Tournament aims to develop wrestlers by giving them valuable match experience and the opportunity to learn from experienced athletes and coaches.
