The Drakensberg Boys’ Choir will be celebrating Youth Day (June 16) by inspiring us with their music.
Join the choir on Saturday, June 16, at the “Singing Ambassadors of South Africa” event, in conjunction with the Cincinnati Boys’ Choir, as they entertain visitors in Champagne Valley with their divine voices.
The Drakensberg Boys’ Choir, whose school is nestled in a World Heritage Site in the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Mountains, has been delivering performances and entertained not just nationally but internationally for the past 50 years. They have visited over 50 different countries around the globe and are responsible for guiding numerous famous South African artists on their course. These include Nicholas Nicolaides, Pieter Koen and the Bala Brothers, to mention just a few.
The Cincinnati Boys’ Choir, all the way from the urban arts core of Cincinnati at the Aronoff Center in the United States of America, has been in existence since 1965. The Cincinnati Boys’ Choir has been dedicated to the musical, intellectual and emotional development of young men: boys attend weekly rehearsals and music theory classes, as well as retreats.
The Cincinnati Boys’ Choir collaborates regularly with the Cincinnati Opera. Boys have appeared in nearly every Cincinnati Opera season for more than a decade, including 2016’s premiere of a new production of Tosca and La Bohème. Additional collaborators have included the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Pops, the Cincinnati May Festival, Vocal Arts Ensemble, and Elementz: A Place for Hip-Hop and Respect.
Soloists from the choir have performed with the Cincinnati Opera, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Pops, the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, and with many other national and regional orchestras. Six members of the choir have gone on to join the world-famous Vienna Boys’ Choir.
Participation in the Champion’s Competition of the World Choir Games in July 2012 resulted in two silver medals for the boys in the mixed choir and youth choir divisions.
