On the evening of Friday (May 25), Tania recalled saying goodnight to her female Jack Russel, Bekkie, and male Jack Russel cross Dachshund, Dexter, before going to bed at around 1.45am.

Dexter and Bekkie’s disappearance

“We posted pictures of our pets on social media in hopes that someone would spot them. We drove around for almost three hours in the lower Signal Hill area searching for them.”

The devastating discovery

Four days later, one of the dogs was spotted outside the van der Merwe’s property.

“Dexter was already foaming at the mouth; his tongue was blue and he had turned stiff,” said an emotional Tania.

The second dog, Bekkie, was later found on the other side of the property.

According to Tania, one of Bekkie’s eyes had been removed.

A family heartbroken

“I wasn’t a dog person but Bekkie and Dexter crawled into my heart and loved me. They were very protective dogs. We treated them like our children,” said a tearful Tania.

“Dexter was a birthday gift to my son, and both my children are distraught.”
