PREVIEW: CCTV camera system to be restored in July

Despite initial claims by officials, the CCTV camera system is only 20 per cent functional, and may come fully online by July.

At present, Newcastle’s CCTV camera system is only 20 per cent functional.

Despite being only six years old, the surveillance system suffered significant damage in January 2017 after lightning strikes caused an electrical surge.

This surge wiped out several of the internal servers.

Chief of Security Services, Pieter Marais explained said a service provider was expected to begin restoring or repairing the system within the next two weeks.

This date would coincide with the start of a new financial year.
