Sassa says glitches cause delay in payouts, affecting pensioners

Thousands of pensioners have complained that they have not been able to withdraw their money at designated pay points since Sunday

Ladysmith pensioners have been hit hard by the ongoing grant crisis that has hit the country, leading to some grant beneficiaries not being able to access their money since the beginning of this week.

Abraham Mahlangu, who is the chief executive of Sassa‚ told parliament’s portfolio committee on social development that the affected beneficiaries could not receive their grants due to a glitch in the system. The system had evidently taken strain due to the high number of people who had registered with the post office.

Thousands of pensioners have complained that they have not been able to withdraw their money (using their new cards) at designated pay points since Sunday. Many of them were turned away because Sassa officials said there were glitches in the system.

This and the numerous attempts to access grants by the beneficiaries contributed to the strain on the system, which led to the “timing out” of the system.

In Ladysmith, hundreds of pensioners say they are still trying to get their money and that this money is the only income they have.
