E.coli tests reveal a stinking truth about water contamination in Vryheid
The sewage from Bhekuzulu is flowing directly into Besterspruit and subsequently into Klipfontein Dam.
THE presence of E.coli in water is a strong indication of recent sewage or animal waste contamination, as well as the possible presence of disease-causing pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
Recent tests done in Besterspruit by AfriForum reveal that Vryheid’s water contains no less than 24 196 units per 100ml. Somewhat disturbing when one considers that, according to AfriForum, the correct number should be zero.

According to a report by the Vryheid branch of AfriForum, who carried out the tests, the sewage from Bhekuzulu is flowing directly into Besterspruit and subsequently into Klipfontein Dam. This is due to the fact that the pumps that are supposed to pump the sewage to the sewage works have not been working for months.
“This report will be submitted to the Department of Water and Sanitation in Durban,” states AfriForum Vryheid Chairman, Andrè van der Walt. “They will then have to put pressure on AbaQulusi Municipality to rectify the matter…”
